What E955 actually is
Sucralose is made from sugar but the body cannot use it. Three hydroxyl groups on the sucrose molecule are replaced with chlorine atoms, which makes it far sweeter and, more importantly, makes it unrecognisable to the enzymes that would normally break sugar down. It therefore delivers sweetness with essentially no calories.
What it is made from
Manufactured by chemically modifying sucrose, which is plant-derived from cane or beet. Nothing animal-derived enters the process.
Vegan, vegetarian, and halal status
Sucralose is suitable for vegan, vegetarian, halal, and kosher diets. Note that tabletop products such as Splenda are mostly bulking agents, usually maltodextrin and dextrose, with only a tiny amount of actual sucralose, which is why they still carry a few calories per sachet.
Is E955 safe?
Sucralose is approved in over eighty countries. EFSA set an acceptable daily intake of 15 mg per kg of body weight per day, and the FDA reviewed over a hundred studies before approving it. Around 85 percent passes through unabsorbed. Two genuine research questions remain open. One is whether baking with sucralose at high temperature produces chloropropanols, which is why some guidance suggests it is better suited to cold applications. The other is the broader question, applying to all non-sugar sweeteners, of effects on gut bacteria and on appetite regulation, where the WHO issued a 2023 guideline advising against using non-sugar sweeteners for weight control on the basis of low-certainty evidence.
